E-World Online, a leading provider of comprehensive e-waste take-back programs for electronics manufacturers and inventory management solutions for national retailers, says it will surpass 200 million pounds of end-of-life electronics and returned merchandise managed through its Manufacturer Interstate Take-back System (MITS) and Retail Return Program (RRP) by year-end.
Recycling one computer and monitor saves 530 pounds of fossil fuels, 48 pounds of chemicals, and 1.5 tons of water, according to the company.
E-waste is estimated to only comprise .01 percent to Telegram Number Data 3 percent of the world’s solid waste stream — .01 percent to 1 percent in developing countries and 1 percent to 3 percent in developed countries (per the UNEP’s 2007 E-Waste Volume I: Inventory Assessment Manual). But despite being such a small portion of the world’s total waste stream, e-waste is receiving a lot of attention as it is highly toxic and as its volume is growing rapidly (in some cases 2-3 times faster than any other waste stream, according to the EPA), wrote Nana Lapham, an analyst with SBI Energy, in an EL Analyst brief.
The value of the total global e-waste R&R services market rested at $6.8 billion in 2010, up from $6.2 billion in 2009 and up nearly 43.2 percent, or $2.05 billion, from 2006. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the four-year period is estimated at close to 9.4 percent, while the most growth was seen from 2009 to 2010, when the market grew by almost 9.7 percent. This significant growth is due to a number of factors, including an increase in e-waste volume, expanded e- waste awareness and growing e-waste R&R market stability, according to SBI Energy.
E-World Online’s e-MRG software powers both the MITS and RRP programs. According to e-MRG data, more than 120 million pounds of e-waste was collected through MITS from 2010-2013 and an additional 84 million pounds will be collected and processed in 2013, while the RRP program, launched in June 2012, has already managed over 14 million pounds of returned merchandise. e-MRG allows for the tracking, documenting and reporting of any material stream, from collection downstream to its end point. It also allows for documentation of the management of materials to confirm everything is handled to the highest standard of environmental responsibility.
